ONE PLANET – IT’S ALL WE’VE GOT!

On 12th December, 2017, exactly two years after the historic Paris Agreement was concluded, the world (at least most of it) gathered in Paris, France for the One Planet Summit.

A main focus of the event is “to determine how those working in public and private finance can innovate to support and accelerate our common efforts to fight climate change.”

The three aims of the One Planet Summit:

  1.  Take tangible and collective action

There are solutions, let’s roll them out globally and locally as swiftly as possible.

  1. Innovate

Let’s be creative and resourceful in adapting our systems to the inevitable changes and step up our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  1. Support one another

We are all affected by climate change, but some of us are more vulnerable than others. Let’s work together for the good of all and increase our support even more to the countries and peoples who need it most.

I’m thrilled to know that during the summit, 12 commitments were made. 12 commitments made, 12 commitments to be kept. Emmanuel Macron warned the One Planet Summit participants: “Think long and hard, if you make a commitment, we will hold you to it.” They thought long and hard… and decided to commit. These are more than commitments, they are actions.

Also, the One Planet Coalition was created; it will ensure that the commitments are kept. The coming months will be dedicated to implementing the commitments and participants will meet again next year for a project meeting: the second One Planet Summit.

I choose to remain optimistic and support the 12 #OnePlanet commitments. We have only #OnePlanet – there is no planet B. No sacrifice we make for the planet will ever be too great. As you make your plans and resolutions for 2018, please make the well-being of the planet a priority.
